Coastal Commission Requirements
For fire rebuilds, the Coastal Commission offers expedited pathways — but you have to understand the rules to qualify:
- Like-for-like rebuilds in the original footprint can qualify for an expedited coastal permit
- Fire rebuilds in Malibu are generally exempt from CEQA environmental review
- Wastewater systems can often be replaced within the original footprint
- Larger redesigns require a full Coastal Development Permit and a longer timeline
